Over 1,000 children from underprivileged homes got a chance to celebrate Children’s Day at Underwater World Singapore (UWS) this year. These children, who come from various schools and non-profit organisations, were invited to participate in the annual community fundraising event Children for Children where pupils from CHIJ (Kellock) would organise a fun-filled day for the participants.
In its third year in 2010, the response rate was the best as yet. The 1,000-children mark was crossed two months prior to the event. Children for Children was jointly organised by The Old Parliament House Limited, The Business Times and CHIJ (Kellock) with UWS as the site sponsor. Mr Lui Tuck Yew, Acting Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts, was the guest-of-honour for the event.
Children for Children 2010 hoped to raise $250,000 through donations from organisations and individuals. Net proceeds went to ChildAid, which supports The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund and The Business Times Budding Artists Fund. From 1 October 2010, the BT BAF will extend its arts programmes to economically disadvantaged youths below 19 years of age, the age limit of ChildAid performers.
